7/30 Final Projects Here!

Nevaeh's final project (Mary)

This is the current state of Nevaeh's final project. We have one more session together and are unlikely to finish, but have made some great strides. Nevaeh is working to synthesize 4 of the ghost stories we've read this summer. She is creating a slide deck/narrative that includes Resurrection Mary, La Llorona, the Woman in Red from the Drake Hotel (who she has renamed Fancy Nancy), and Adele Langer from the Congress Hotel.

Her plan has the first 3 ghosts hanging out with each other and excluding Adele Langer, in part because she threw her children out of a window before jumping and Nevaeh is not ok with that at all. In her story, Resurrection Mary (who was likely killed in a car accident), La Llorona, and Fancy Nancy hang out while continuing to attempt to relive their deaths/the night they died. La Llorona and the Fancy Nancy are really fixated on their deaths and unfinished business, but Mary just wants to have a good time, go dancing, and then get the Bloody Mary that is left for her at Chet's Melody Bar every night (according to the Reader article we read).

At the end of the story, Adele Langer, who has seen them hang out, becomes enraged and hits the other ghosts with a car, bringing us full circle to Mary's death. Here she is, seeing La Llorona on her way to the Drake. Her expressions are meant to convey her anger at seeing La Llorona and her evil nature.

I am unsure of what that does to the ghosts; we haven't gotten there.

Nevaeh has worked on digital literacy and analyzing images throughout this project. She is synthesizing many stories together while creating characters that build off of her understanding of their traits from these stories. She has demonstrated an interest in "unfinished business" and continues to use that as motivation for her ghosts.

Parker's project (Mary)

Well, on day 12, Parker decided he had enough of animals. So, we read about boats instead! Here is his drawing of a ship, as well as his sentence: A ship has a big engine.

Daniel's Final Project--Ms. Herrada

Daniel created a final project that informs his audience of a couple tips for training one's dog and a few effects surrendering one's dog has on the dog. Daniel designed, revised, and edited his own project. He spent two weeks exploring texts to collect evidence for his project. Here is a link to Daniel's project and a few pictures below.

Jonathan's Final Project--Ms. Herrada

Jonathan loves playing video games. He is without a doubt a gamer. Jonathan chose to record a Public Service Announcement for teachers and parents about allowing kids to play Minecraft. Jonathan researched ways teachers could include Minecraft in their classroom and made a list of the benefits of allowing kids to play Minecraft to address the parents in his audience. We had some technical difficulties recording his video, unfortunately.

Here is an image of Jonathan's speech.

Christian's Final Writing Project (Ellie)
Christian wrote a personal narrative about an experience he had when his car broke down and he missed one of our tutoring sessions.  Below you will see his first draft compared with his final draft that has been revised. We spent a lot of time making edits and revisions. He worked hard and I was proud of his final draft!

Daniel's Final Writing Project (Ellie)
After reading a couple of personal essays from other authors about their name, Daniel wrote his own personal essay about his name. We spent some time editing and revising it to make it better. He did an awesome job!

Daisy's Final Project - Mrs. Gonzalez

Daisy's final project was an informational brochure that gave valuable information on how to care for cats. She spent a lot of time researching and gathering information to make sure the advice was based on facts. Daisy worked super hard, going back to her final draft multiple times, revising and editing her work. I am very proud of her and know that she is a true guardian of cats! 🐈🐈🐈

Zoe's Final Project - Mrs. Gonzalez
Zoe is the author of a non-fiction book about humpback whales. She spent many hours reading articles and books about whales to be able to inform her reader. Zoe even watched several videos on whales that recorded them in their natural habitat in order to better understand their underwater life. I can truly say this book was made with love and I am so proud of Zoe! 🐋🐋🐋

Barbara's Final Project - A Timeline and Synthesis
Barbara and I discovered many different topics about space and Mars during our time together. Working together we put all of the events we studied into their chronological order in history and enhanced them with their most important details. We also discussed how the events are connected to each other.

Sofia's Final Project - A Reflective Book Collage Sofia and I read the science fiction novel Life As We Knew It. Sofia's final project was to produce a book collage using pictures that represented pieces of the book (characters, plot, theme, etc) She also had to explain the significance of her photo to the story and why she chose it.

Isaias's Final Project - A Video on the Plausibility of Time Travel
Opposite of Always by Justin A. ReynoldsIsaias researched the astrophysics behind the premise of time travel as demonstrated in the science fiction novel, Opposite of Always, by Justin A. Reynolds. In his research, he explored spacetime, gravity, black holes, wormholes, String Theory, and many other theoretical concepts related to time travel. He wrote about some of these concepts and had other scientists critique his scientific writing. He even had a chat with an actual astrophysicist! Having conversations within the scientific community is an important part of being a scientist. Isaias then honed his scientific writing and argumentation skills to explain why the time travel described in the novel is NOT plausible. This argument is presented in the video below.

Eliana's Final Project - Decoupaged Bird Box and Artist Statement

Eliana researched bird migration through Chicago and the challenges that birds face during migration. She found a way that she could help in the bird conservancy effort in her own backyard. Each Spring and Summer, this bird box will serve as a home for a member of a species in decline in our area. In planning for the art piece that she would create, Eliana researched several artists whose work interacts with nature, is made with natural objects and/or serves as environmental stewardship and/or activism. She also researched and practiced art techniques such as cyanotype and decoupage. She ended up using decoupage with the natural materials that you see below. Finally, Eliana composed her artist statement, using the artist statements of other artists as models and developing her descriptive writing to convey what her art piece is, how it was made, what story it tells and why that story is important. Here are photographs of her beautiful work along with her artist statement.

Artist Statement:
This bird box is made for the Great Crested Flycatcher. I made this bird box to show people how they can help birds. It will help a bird because it is a shelter for them and it will be a home too. Now one less bird is going to die because if one more bird has a home, then it will be able to survive. If people don’t help, then maybe someday there will be no birds left. I chose the Great Crested Flycatcher because it is declining in this area.

I don’t like to just sit around and do nothing. I like to be outside in nature. I chose to use natural materials because I think they are pretty.  I decoupaged leaves and petals of small flowers onto a wooden nest box to make a collage. The leaves are different shades of green, and some are a whitish color. Different color combinations make it more interesting. For instance, on the bird shape I made, the wings were a light green, the body was a dark green, the head was yellow, and the tail was white. The leaves have different consistencies. Some leaves are kind of twisty and others are kind of flat. The process of making this collage was very interesting because I haven’t decoupaged or collaged anything before. I hope that if people see it, it might encourage them to help and maybe they’ll get a bird box too. Some resources to help you do this are,

Nathan's Final Project

Nathan researched and read about a few historical events that made Chicago into the city that it is today. He made a brochure geared towards someone who has never been to the city before and need a one-stop guide showcasing the history and attractions of the city. After gathering research, Nathan decided which categories would be most important for the audience and planned out where to put those categories. He wrote out the information given in the brochure in a brainstorming/planning document first and then transferred the information over. Nathan did SUCH an amazing job reading, researching and writing throughout our five weeks together. He is truly an expert of the city that he loves!

Ms. Grullon's Example:

Nicolas' Final Project

Nicolas read Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot and the Unpleasant Penguins from Pluto and selected the climax of the story when Mighty Robot fights the Penguins but then gets stuck because of the Penguinmobiles froze his feet, preventing the Mighty Robot from saving anyone. Enjoy the clip!

Joshua's Final Project (Julie)
Joshua read books and articles that I provided, and research text about solution for ocean plastic pollution. He learned that plastic pollution not only harms the animal life under the sea but also animals live around the sea. Plastic can break down to microplastic. It polluted both ocean and human communities. We may be consuming it. We talked about some topics about ocean pollution and list out the topic we can dive deep into. He developed a sense of we can help to protect the environment, save the animals, and stop animal endangered. He decided to make a digital book about ocean pollution and persuade people to help solve the plastic pollution problem. He loves book creator and has so much fun on it. Here is the book with his cute drawing.

Yoselin's Final Project (Julie)
Yoselin loves pandas. She wants to know pandas' life cycle, habitat, historical events that cause extinction, and ways we can help increase the population of pandas. She read books and articles online to gather information about pandas. She used the information she learns to make a diorama about how pandas' home are disrupted by human events and natural disasters. We were planned to record a short presentation of her explains her diorama. Unfortunately, we can barely finish writing the draft. I am still waiting for her to send me the picture of the diorama. Below is the screenshot and her script.
TRUMAN R. 5th Grader
This narrative is about the hero adventure of Flamthrower Management as he saves the city of Chicago. Enjoy! Fire Vs.Ice

Jose A. 8th Grader
A letter to the Mayor and his alderman about civil rights for immigrants.

Lori Lightfoot
Mayor
121 N LaSalle St UNIT 507
Chicago, IL 60602

Dear Mayor Lightfoot,

My name is Jose, I am in 8th grade and I go to Gunsaulus Scholastic Academy. I live in Brighton Park, a neighborhood that's very nice and it is very supportive. The best thing in my neighborhood is that they are all very calm, because everybody talks to each other. I like to invite people for parties and BBQ at my house and also I like it when people have block parties. I am Mexican-American and I have 2 siblings, one a boy and the other is a girl. Immigrants rights are important to me because I have family members that are immigrants and they worked very hard to get to where they are right now. As I am getting older I have noticed that immigrants have to work very hard to get money. It is very hard for them to get a job since they are not citizens. I believe that immigrants are mistreated and they deserve civil rights.
In my research on the contributions of immigrants in Chicago, I found that “Nearly 40,000 immigrant-owned businesses generated $659 million in income in 2016” (Crain's Business). This shows that you don't have to be a citizen to be successful and it shows that immigrants are not that different from citizens. I also researched how the city helps immigrants. I discovered Chicago’s CityKey program. This program helps immigrants by giving city discounts, can be used as a library card, it can be a government card, and can be used as a  CTA card. I think the CityKey program is important for immigrants because it gives immigrants benefits and helps immigrants adjust to Chicago. However, I do think that the city could do more by offering loans to immigrants to start a business or to go back to school. Civil rights are rights you have to protest for and some citizens are more privileged than others. I would like to see immigrants have more equal rights and there should be less discrimination to immigrants and more equality. Chicago can do more! In my research I discovered the New York City Immigrant Bridge Program. According to the city website, this program is a “pilot loan program aimed at boosting the earning potential of the city's immigrant population.” The program gives immigrants loan and helps with there job in sectors like accounting, healthcare and technology  I think Chicago could start a program but it is not as limited and could help undocumented immigrants.
The CityKey and Immigration Bridge program are similar because they are trying to give immigrants benefits. I like that the CityKey program is easier to access than the immigrant bridge program. I believe that the perfect program for immigrants in Chicago would look like the CityKey but it will also have money on it. Also, it could be used for buying food, used for going back to school and to start a business. Chicago needs a program like this because immigrants can make their own way in Chicago and this could help boost the city’s business community.
These changes for immigrant civil rights are important for my family and community because programs could provide more opportunities. More immigrant families living Brighton Park could make it an even better place to live with more stores, parks, restaurants, and organization. If we start this program, a lot of people will appreciate it, be thankful, and it will make Chicago a better place!

Sincerely,

Jose Arellano

Megan- Explorer #2 final project (Adrian)

Adrian studied elements of graphic novels so he decided he wanted to complete a graphic novel. We read an article about an exhibit at the Art Institute so he decided to incorporate it into his story. We worked on a story brainstorm sheet together and discussed different important elements of a fiction story. Then we created this final graphic novel!

Megan Explorer #1 (Alexander)
Alexander loved science and learning about plants and animals. So we decided to study how they work together in different environments. We read many nonfiction texts about plants and animals and different ecosystems. We looked closely at how these books were organized. We decided together we wanted to create a book! Because Alexander's family spends a lot of time at Bemis forest preserve we decided that was the perfect place to write our book about! :)
